Took too long
Why is it that unenjoyable things seem to take longer than things you would like to be doing? I find that to be true with Devil Incarnate by Angel Lawson and Samantha Rue.
It took me far too long to make it through this book. The overall idea is that Heaston did Georgia dirty by recording them doing the dirty spread it around, he goes to jail, then as part of his penance, he is an assistant coach at her High School. Obviously, there is much more fluff in there but that's the quick low down.
So the first issue I had with this book from the get-go, George and Georgia...just no. To each their own, but that is just too similar even for siblings let alone twins. Maybe there is a back story to this ridiculous naming similarity and I just missed it. Speaking of backstories…I am so lost by chapter one. Now mind you I recognize this is 100% my fault for not reading the first three books (when the book was recommended I was told it wasn’t necessary), but most series’ give you a bit of recap when the next book in the series comes around. Not this bad boy. There is nada to explain what the heck is going on. Who and what is this secret society? Well, I guess that’s the point of a secret society without the first three books you don’t know.
Heaston’s back story is eluded to as is Georgia’s but other than the fact that they made a “special” video and Heaston sent it to the whole school, it went viral, Georgia loses it a bit and becomes a wanton woman that’s all you get. That’s the other kicker, you have no idea who these characters are. There’s no build-up of their personalities, basically no character building I’m assuming because it’s been established in the previous three books.
Hitting the 15% mark now, and while it may trigger some, the spice level is π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯. This book is definitely a "depends on what you're into" type of book. For some, it will have the perfect level of dark and dirty kink. Others it's going to be too rough for. Going in knowing there is some rough sexual encounters, just an FYI. If that's your thing and you don't mind some fluff this is the book for you.
The character development is super slow which is probably why this book took me so long to get into and finish, I just was not invested in the characters or story until about 78% in. Finally, the characters develop and I actually grew invested. I wanted to know more and how the rest of the book ended. I wanted to see how and if they get their HEA. If Heaston could get past his issues and Georgia could trust again (cliche I know). Like I said I'm finally invested. I hate that though, I would rather be pulled in a lot sooner and have at least an emotional connection to some character. I don’t have that here I have more of a fuzzy need to see the happy unicorns and rainbows at the end.
Overall not the worst thing I've read, but not the best. Now on top of that will, I go back and read the first 3 books to fill in the blanks? Gonna be a no there. But for those considering cutting straight to the chase, you have been warned.
